Make Your Home Safe
Here are some additional safety tips for protecting your home and the people in it.
- Be sure that your address is easily visible from the road so emergency vehicles can find you.
- Install smoke detectors and change batteries every six months.
- Keep ABC type fire extinguishers and know how and when to use them.
- Strap down your water heater and fit I with a flexible gas supply line.
- Have a standard telephone. Telephones that require electricity will not operate in a power failure and cell phones may not function in a disaster.
- Know how and when to switch off your utilities.
- Store dangerous chemicals safely.
- Move beds away from window and heavy objects that could fall.
- Store heavy items on the lowest shelves.
- Secure pictures and wall hangings, tabletop items, and top-heavy items such as refrigerators, bookcases and file cabinets.
