Make Your Home Safe

Here are some additional safety tips for protecting your home and the people in it.

  • Be sure that your address is easily visible from the road so emergency vehicles can find you.

  • Install smoke detectors and change batteries every six months.

  • Keep ABC type fire extinguishers and know how and when to use them.

  • Strap down your water heater and fit I with a flexible gas supply line.

  • Have a standard telephone. Telephones that require electricity will not operate in a power failure and cell phones may not function in a disaster.

  • Know how and when to switch off your utilities.

  • Store dangerous chemicals safely.

  • Move beds away from window and heavy objects that could fall.

  • Store heavy items on the lowest shelves.

  • Secure pictures and wall hangings, tabletop items, and top-heavy items such as refrigerators, bookcases and file cabinets.
